Architecture & Interior Design

DVA Architecture, in collaboration with WDM Architects, spearheaded the architectural design of The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's ambitious $5.8 million Asian Highlands habitat project. This endeavor aimed to modernize animal habitats, elevate visitor experiences, and spotlight the zoo's ongoing conservation initiatives globally.
Our design team meticulously integrated Asian influences and cultural motifs throughout the 1.3-acre space, infusing it with authenticity and charm. From intricately crafted custom stonework to the iconic presence of moon gates and the creation of spacious glass viewing areas, every aspect was thoughtfully considered to transport visitors to an immersive Asian-inspired environment.
Central to the exhibit's design philosophy was the strategic grouping of animals by species. The habitat is home to diverse inhabitants, including Amur leopards, snow leopards, red pandas, and takins. Notably, significant expansions were made to the habitats of the Amur and snow leopards, increasing their size by over fourfold. This expansion allowed for the creation of interconnected habitats, enabling the animals to rotate between different environments, enriching their daily experiences and promoting natural behaviors.
