The Department of Campus Planning and Facilities Management began renovating the first floor of Tomlinson Hall early April and is expected to finish by August, just in time for the fall 2026 semester. The project is projected to cost around $3.7 million.

This follows the university’s recent renovations to student life in Adelbert Gymnasium, Olin Building, several residence halls and the construction of the new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB), CWRU’s largest-ever project on the Case Quad. ISEB was designed with the idea of fostering collaboration across engineering, technology and other STEM fields. This will likely lead to increased foot traffic on the quad due to the addition of new dining options for students and faculty.

The renovation plans include a new food service option with seating areas for eating and studying. A wide range of quick-service options will be available, including a coffee bar and Mediterranean food. The traditional coffee shop will include crepes, smoothies and gelato, while the Mediterranean restaurant will have sandwiches, salads and bowls. There will be a mix of vegan, vegetarian and halal meals available. The options will use a combination of mobile and kiosk ordering.

“We are committed to keeping campus dining experiences fresh and engaging,” Christine Torrence, Associate Vice President for Campus Services, said. “Each year, we conduct surveys to better understand what is working well and where we can improve.”

The first floor is only phase one of the renovation. Next year, the ground floor will be updated with an upgraded layout and seating area, expanded service points and new menu options.

“This initiative represents a key step in advancing our long-term vision by enhancing and modernizing our dining program to match the bold, welcoming new gateway to CWRU,” Jim Bolland, Resident District Manager for Bon Appétit, said.

The university partnered with the Student Food Committee, University Student Government and Residence Hall Association to develop these new dining services to fit the needs of students. The common themes that were present in student feedback included a desire for more diverse and faster meal options. Bon Appétit held pop-up events to test students’ thoughts on the new food concepts, and Campus Services will continue to collect student feedback and data even after the space opens to gauge student satisfaction.

Overall, the Tomlinson Hall renovation shows CWRU’s consistent efforts to modernize the campus, especially in areas that benefit student needs. By integrating more diverse, convenient and inclusive dining options alongside new study areas, this new space will create another prominent spot on the Case Quad.

DVA Architecture is providing architectural and interior design services for the new Broadview Heights Fire Station, planned for the city campus along Broadview Road near Bender Memorial Drive. The $11 million, 17,500-square-foot facility represents a major investment in public safety and civic infrastructure. City council members approved an agreement with DVA Architecture last June to provide full architectural services, with Infinity Construction serving as the construction manager at risk.

The project was designed by DVA Architecture and DS Architecture to serve as a welcoming gateway to the Broadview Heights civic campus—supporting the operational needs of the fire department while also functioning as a resource for the community. The building was thoughtfully planned to blend with the surrounding campus architecture and create an approachable public presence.

Operational efficiency and firefighter wellness were central to the design. The facility includes proper dorm rooms for crew members and ample double pull-through apparatus bays to support quick, efficient response times. Because the site fronts a busy roadway, the design carefully balances privacy with access to natural light and fresh air. Crew living and support spaces are located toward the rear of the building, providing a quieter environment for rest, decompression, and recovery.

Decontamination areas, gear storage, and equipment maintenance spaces were strategically centralized within the apparatus bay to allow immediate access while minimizing the risk of cross-contamination. A mezzanine level above these spaces provides generous storage capacity and integrated training features, enhancing the building’s long-term flexibility and functionality.

Groundbreaking for the new Broadview Heights Fire Station is anticipated to begin this year, marking an important milestone in DVA Architecture's ongoing work to deliver thoughtful, community-focused civic architecture.

Call it a reverse Joni Mitchell: Cleveland State University plans to turn a 4,000-square-foot parking garage in the historic Middough Building into an artistic paradise.

The Galleries at East 13th Street will become a permanent home for student exhibitions, faculty shows and community-based art after years of rotating through borrowed spaces.

The project dovetails with broader efforts by Playhouse Square, the city and county officials to transform East 13th Street, along with Euclid Avenue and Chester Avenue, into a vibrant part of Cleveland’s downtown arts district.

“Thirteenth Street is a street in downtown Cleveland that could probably best be described as something we pass through on the way to somewhere else,” said Andrew Kersten, dean of CSU’s College of Arts and Sciences.

"As we lengthen and develop the footprint of the arts campus downtown, we want people to know they can stop here and take a look at the People’s Art Show, or take a look at the great work that CSU art students are doing, or take a look at an exhibit that one of our faculty members brought in, or see a show that’s dedicated just to young artists and creatives in the Cleveland region," he said.

CSU lost its former gallery space on Euclid Avenue three years ago when Playhouse Square declined to renew the lease. Since then, student work has found temporary homes in local venues like Bonfoey, Bostwick, and Yards Gallery, but Kersten remained focused on securing a permanent home.

“CSU needs to have its art gallery," he said, "and we need to be part of the growth and development of the arts district downtown.”

After doing an internal assessment of downtown spaces — either to rent or to build — CSU’s leadership kept coming back to the Middough Building (now called the CSU Arts Campus), which it bought in 2023 after serving as a tenant for 13 years.

The space had the right ingredients for a gallery — a ground floor location with large windows — and the basic requirements for HVAC, water and power, along with easy loading access.

“The space is right now sort of a concrete box; it's perfect for whatever you're going to design,” Kersten said. “If you look at that space, it kind of looks like a Frank Lloyd Wright building with the fluted columns. This space can have some movable walls and that's where you begin to replicate what we had in the other galleries. We had some movable walls that were very tall that you can hang art and it was modular so you can also fit in different kinds of three-dimensional work, two-dimensional work and then you know the liquid or know film video work that you can also present in those spaces.

“You can adapt and fit just about everything you need in there.” As for the exterior? Right now, it’s marked only by a small CSU sign. “What we need is a giant sign that says, ‘ART HERE,’” Kersten said.

Although it has been a tumultuous 12 months for the university, CSU's leadership is prioritizing the project. It helps that the 13th Street project's costs won't be covered by CSU's structural or operating budget. Plus, CSU President Laura Bloomberg and Provost Nigamanth Sridhar already were on board with creating a permanent campus gallery.

“When they saw what I was suggesting, they were like, ‘Yeah, I can see it. This is gonna work. This is gonna be fantastic,’” said Kersten, who worked with DVA Architecture (formerly Van Auken Akins Architects) on the planning. “And then as we just began to discuss this with our partners, they got very excited.

“We want to create something that will really stand the test of time." CSU’s neighbors agree.

In a promotional brochure, Playhouse Square CEO Craig Hassall said his organization is “thrilled” about the investment. Ideastream Public Media’s Mark A. Rosenberger highlighted the promise of “a hip, accessible space that blends arts, culture, education, and community.” Longtime CSU supporters Joanie and Tom Adler described the gallery as essential to “activating and beautifying East 13th Street”.

The Adlers have already been announced as lead donors, and CSU is looking for more in what Kersten called the “silent phase” of fundraising for the project. The gallery’s scope is dependent on those efforts as well as construction costs, which have escalated in recent years and could rise higher due to the political climate.

That said, if CSU can raise all of its lead gifts by the end of 2025, it could complete the design-build phase in nine or 10 months, meaning it would be available for the 2026 fall semester, Kersten said.

“More likely, we're looking at the summer of 2027,” Kersten said. “But if I could say to an incoming student, ‘Come here, we have this new gallery for art students,’ that would be powerful.”

Dix & Eaton Chairman and CEO Chas Withers said the firm has a long history with Playhouse Square, dating back to its co-founder, Henry Eaton, being “one of the driving forces in the complete renovation” of the theater district.

“I think he’d be really excited about the fact that we’re moving to Playhouse Square,” Withers said of Eaton, who died in 2003. “He’d feel really good about that.”

Eaton served on the board of Playhouse Square for nearly two decades. Scott Chaikin, Dix & Eaton's former chairman and CEO, is currently a member of the board. Withers said the search for new HQ space goes back about five years.

“We were looking around for a space that we felt like it suited us culturally, gave us the room and resources to do our work really well, and we love that part of town,” Withers said. “ I feel like there's a vibrancy there, but also, it's really in this growth mode …”

Parking was a factor, he said, as the new location will be more accessible and “much more affordable” than the premium and expensive options near the current office. The new space is also near many partners, friends, and organizations that the firm has worked for.

The Bulkley Building was one of seven or eight spaces within the Cleveland area that Dix & Eaton looked at, but when firm officials walked in, “We were like, this is where we want to be,” Withers said.

Dix & Eaton was able to build out the space to meet current needs on the eighth and ninth floors of the building, with input from employees, Withers said. The firm is renting the space.

“We want the office to be a destination of choice for people,” Withers said. “So, a great place to collaborate, be with your colleagues, do the work, but also a place that you want to come to because there's a vibrancy and energy and creativity to it.”

Dix & Eaton offices are open every day, but hybrid employees are asked to be in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There are 70 employees within the company: 40 in the main Cleveland office, 10 remotely throughout the country and the rest in St. Louis from

The firm wanted more conference rooms and collaborative areas than it has at its current headquarters on the 39th floor of the Huntington Building. Withers said the new location will also have an open kitchen, shared common spaces, and uninterrupted sightlines from one side of the office to the other. The conference rooms will have dual screens to recreate face-to-face experiences with remote coworkers. Content will be displayed on one screen, and views of callers will be displayed on the other.

Withers said confidentiality is important to the firm because it handles financial and crisis matters for clients. So, while the eighth floor will have open spaces for collaboration, doors will close for privacy.

There will be an open-flow staircase on the eighth floor that will lead to the ninth floor in addition to an elevator.

The ninth floor is more open to collaboration for workers. It provides spots to bring in those who work in St. Louis and serves as an “overflow and expansion space,” he said. It also allows the firm to host events.

The outdoor patio on the roof gives employees another place to work, or it can be used as an additional event space.

“We wanted to have the space be a place people want to come to, both in terms of the work they do, but also the ability to socialize with each other,” Withers said. “We're a very collegial group ... so I'm pretty sure it's going to be a well-used space.”

The "What’s New in Exhibit Design" session featured new and diverse exhibits from across AZA member institutions, demonstrating how the industry is creatively adapting to meet animals’ needs and enhance visitor engagement. As DVA works on projects like Primate Forest, this session emphasized the importance of leveraging design to foster a deeper connection between people and wildlife.

Safety in animal environments was the focus of the "Human Safety is Animal Safety" panel, where Holly gained insights into risk mitigation strategies for facilities housing dangerous animals. Presenters discussed tools like Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and emphasized both physical and psychological safety, highlighting best practices for aligning safety protocols with industry standards and OSHA regulations. This panel, led by an impressive all-women team of experts, underscored the need for careful planning and design to protect both zoo staff and the animals they care for—a commitment that DVA upholds in each project we undertake.

One of the conference highlights was Zoo Day, a private event allowing attendees exclusive access to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. Holly was able to access back-of-house areas, speak with zoo staff about their facilities and animal management expertise, and tour through their 127 acres of habitats and gardens. This hands-on experience added practical insights into how DVA can enhance habitat design, animal care, and visitor engagement in our ongoing projects.

The latest fashion and design trend coined as "Coastal Grandma" is more than just a look, it’s a timeless feeling. Inspired by the serenity of coastal living and the warmth and elegance of your Grandma (or stylish Aunt), Coastal Grandma brings together natural elements, soft textures, and a laid-back aesthetic. This style embodies the balance of comfort and elegance, making it an ideal choice for anyone looking to bring tranquility and comfort to a space, without sacrificing style. In this edition of “Trend Alert”, our expert interior designers have identified the key design principles to help you embrace the Coastal Grandma look.

Curves and flowing lines reflect the organic beauty of coastal nature. Incorporate furniture and décor with soft, rounded edges that mimic the fluid forms of seashells, driftwood, or ocean waves. These elements offer visual interest while staying true to the coastal aesthetic.

Warm neutrals like sand, ivory, and beige form the foundation of the Coastal Grandma palette. Pair these hues with soft blues and greens to evoke the tranquility of sea and sky. This color scheme works beautifully throughout any room, whether you're designing a cozy living space or a calming hybrid workspace.

Create a Focal Point with a Wood Feature Wall

A standout wood feature wall adds depth and character to any room. By layering tone-on-tone wood elements, you create a visually interesting focal point while keeping the aesthetic calm and cohesive. Whether it's shiplap, weathered wood, or a simple light oak paneling, the natural warmth of wood brings an organic touch that resonates with the coastal theme.

Whether it's subtle patterns or coastal-inspired artwork, coastal motifs infuse a space with that relaxed, beachside feeling. Although these round out the Coastal Grandma feel, you don’t need to make your space beach-themed to achieve this trending look. The beauty of Coastal Grandma lies in bringing a gentle reminder of nature into your space.

           OUTDOOR & BIOPHILIC DESIGN ELEMENTS

The trend of bringing the outdoors in and encouraging indoor dwellers to spend more time outside is embodied in the integration of planters, natural materials, natural shapes, and versatile and comfortable outdoor furniture. By incorporating lush greenery and natural elements like teak wood and stone accents into indoor and outdoor spaces, designers create seamless transitions that blur the distinction between interior and exterior environments. This approach not only enhances visual continuity but also promotes a sense of well-being by fostering connections with nature.

Chairs can be more than furniture – they can be statements of style and functionality. From avant-garde shapes to ergonomic innovations, these chairs seen at NEOCON redefine workspace aesthetics. They blend comfort with creativity, creating inviting environments that inspire productivity and interest.

Using jewel tones in furniture adds a touch of luxury and sophistication to business environments. These rich, deep colors like emerald green, sapphire blue, and amethyst purple create an inviting atmosphere while making a bold statement. Whether in upholstered chairs, statement sofas, or accent pieces like rugs and curtains, jewel tones can elevate the ambiance of any space.

Yesterday marked a major milestone for Cleveland Metroparks Zoo as they, in partnership with DVA Architecture LLC and WDM Architects, officially broke ground on the highly anticipated Primate Forest. This groundbreaking ceremony celebrated the unveiling of plans for the most significant capital project in the zoo’s history—a multi-phase transformation that will redefine the guest experience while elevating the zoo’s role as a leader in global conservation, animal welfare, and education.

The Primate Forest, slated to open in 2026, will feature four innovative spaces, including the CrossCountry Mortgage Forest Home and three immersive animal habitats: Tropical Forest, Orangutan Forest, and Gorilla Forest. At DVA Architecture, we’ve been thrilled to design these spaces to connect visitors with the animals like never before. The new Forest Home will welcome guests with an immersive entry, utilizing projection mapping to highlight the intricate relationship between people, animals, and their habitats. Enhanced dining, retail spaces, and flexible conference areas will create a vibrant, interactive hub for education and discovery.

Key features include the expanded Orangutan Forest, which preserves the iconic 40-foot geodesic dome while adding more engaging outdoor spaces and complex climbing structures for the orangutans. An elevated trail will offer visitors a fresh perspective, bringing them closer to the animals and their care. Meanwhile, the renovation of over 63,000 square feet in the Tropical Forest and plans for the future 25,000-square-foot Gorilla Forest will create world-class habitats that foster both animal well-being and guest education.

           A New Era Has Begun...

We're excited to announce a significant milestone in our journey as a leading Cleveland architectural firm. After 32 years of dedicated service under the name Van Auken Akins Architects LLC, we're embarking on an exciting new chapter as DVA Architecture LLC.

           Why the Change

Change is inevitable, and it's often a catalyst for growth and evolution. Our decision to rebrand was prompted both by a change in ownership and by a desire to reflect our company's vision for the future while honoring our rich legacy of excellence. Since our founder Jill Van Auken Marous retired in 2024 and passed down the company, it was time to reevaluate where we were and where we wanted to go. With a new name and brand identity, we're better positioned to adapt to the evolving needs of our clients and the architectural industry as a whole.

To be a part of the Cleveland Architectural and Design field means the world to me. I’m living out my childhood dreams far more than I could have imagined. I grew up in this area going to events downtown and am now working on projects within those buildings. It’s surreal to look back on those memories and compare them to now where I get to play a part in the revival of those spaces for others to create memories in.

When I was very young, I got to go to work with my dad to ‘Take Your Child to Work Day’. He worked in project management, but there were tons of disciplines within his office that I got to pop around during the day. One of these was their design and planning department, which introduced me to AutoCAD for the first time. They graciously let me design my own bedroom using pre-made furniture blocks. It was this very day that the seed was planted for me. Fast forward through my education and onto my professional career, after many years of experiencing space, people, and how these two affected one another for better or, for worse. I’ve learned a lot in these formative years about the bigger things: the importance of inclusivity and creating equitable space. It isn’t just about the placement of furniture or the colors I’m drawn to, it’s the potential to be a catalyst for change through this career path.

It means I get to do something that I look forward to each day and I can't imagine being in another field.

I have fulfilled my childhood dream of becoming an Architect.

As the Office Manager, working with team members in this field allows me to be a part of the rebuilding and improvement of our community. The ability to be a part of the process from beginning to end and the satisfaction of a job well done in collaboration with other disciplines in the field is very rewarding.

As a young woman just entering the industry, it means a lot to me to have the opportunity to work with like-minded people on incredible projects. It is special to know that my opinion is valued, and more women choosing this career path means that women will continue to get the representation they deserve in the field.

As my parents could tell you, being an architect was all I ever wanted to do since I was a very young kid. Luckily, I had supportive parents and teachers that encouraged me to pursue my passion. Now having three girls myself, I am grateful to be able to show them that they are not limited in their options for future careers.

It means that I get to see firsthand that women have many talents and bring a lot of skill and personality to the field. It’s empowering to watch my coworkers go from being young interns to juggling being mothers and running their own projects and meetings while loving what they do.

It means I get to design spaces that make everyday life a little better for the people who occupy those spaces. The rooms we occupy have an impact on how we feel, and I think it's really cool that I can impact someone's day, even if they don't realize it.

Being a marketer in this field means my job is pretty easy because I am promoting a company and people who truly love what they do – and that shines through! Specifically being a woman in this field means navigating a landscape that may still be male-dominated, but doing so with confidence and resilience.

I love that every project is different. The client, location, project type and needs of the space all change from project to project. It’s exciting to create a new space that adapts to the client’s needs and to see how they respond to the finished project. This field is very collaborative internally as well as working with other disciplines MEP, fire protection, etc. You’re continually learning and expanding your knowledge which contributes greatly towards improving your work. We have a great team at DVA that is supportive and works collaboratively together.

My favorite part about my job is running through quick design concept iterations in an effort to problem-solve a solution for a client. I love utilizing 3D rendering software tools to efficiently produce idea starters that help clients visualize what their space could look and feel like. Lately, what has been most successful is running with a “kit-of-parts” concept where a client can have a hand in choosing what elements work and what elements don’t. From here, we can prioritize what moves forward in the ideation process. I love the creative challenge that comes along with (our not-so-favorite) design constraints brought forth by our projects – when you finally land on the right solution alongside a client, it is the best feeling!

This is probably a common answer, but I love the variety of each day - tasks, projects, schedules, teams, and clients. All projects are different, and they have their own challenges. I enjoy problem-solving and collaborating with the design team. I enjoy the phases and process of design but it's really amazing to see the projects under construction. Nothing beats seeing the completion of a design you've put your creative energy into and improving client's day-to-day, in aesthetics and in functionality.

It’s hard to say “most” because there are so many things, like problem-solving, working with a team of talented people, and making positive changes in the community, but one thing I enjoy a lot is sharing this field with young people. I’ve had the opportunity to speak one-on-one and in groups with students who are interested in architecture and design and it’s fulfilling to expose them to what it means to be an architect and also show them an example of a woman in this profession. On my most recent outing with a class from a STEM school, it was the girls who asked the most questions, and I was so proud of them for their curiosity and confidence!

I really enjoy that I get to draw every day, while simultaneously problem solving. I've always loved to draw, and being able to use that skill to solve the complicated puzzle that is a building, is something I really appreciate.

I love that I get to be creative and use my skills to support passionate and talented people in the architectural field. Every day, I am inspired by the innovative designs and the dedication of our team to bring them to life. It's incredibly fulfilling to collaborate with architects and designers who are driven by a shared vision of creating spaces that not only meet our client's needs but also elevate the human experience. Being able to communicate their expertise and the beauty of their work through marketing initiatives is rewarding.

Don’t be afraid to start or be intimidated by the common misconceptions of our field. Your creativity deserves to be heard and seen. Embrace all parts of a project and give it your all because that will create the most successful and rewarding projects. I encourage the idea of shadowing a professional for a day so that you can expose yourself to a few of the daily tasks of the profession. There are so many opportunities within our field that people aren’t always aware of and if there’s interest within design it’s better to have a full understanding of all the possibilities within our profession.

My advice would be to cling to your passions, be willing to learn and grow and don’t expect to know it all. No two projects are ever the same – you won’t always know the right answers, you might not always love every single design element that your client does, and field conditions are often an unforeseen wrench in your plans. It won’t always be the perfect project, but it can still be a successful one if your head and your heart are in it.

I'd encourage women that their ideas and contributions are invaluable and to be confident in sharing their perspectives. I'd also recommend connecting with other women in the field. Never stop growing and share your experiences with others.

Being in a (mostly) male-dominated industry, I would advise women to confidently enter this field. It’s important to stand up for yourself, make strong decisions, and always start the day with a positive attitude.

When I initially started working in this field 30 years ago, women were a small percentage of the workforce. That has changed drastically since then! I have noticed that potential candidates in this field are successful when they are involved in this field early in their education. Make sure to take advantage of High School shadow opportunities that firms offer. This will give the student a better understanding of what additional skill sets are important to potential employers in today’s competitive job market. Start your internships early in your college career – get your foot in the door!

If you think that you want to be an Architect or Interior Designer, definitely shadow someone in the field and dig into the difficult parts of the job rather than just seeing the fun side. When I first started at DVA, I was blown away by the programming and skills required that take up the majority of the workday for our designers. I love to see the product schemes when laid out but that is a small percentage of the hard work that goes into completing a project.

So continue to learn as much as you can, be open to growth, be curious, ask questions, and be confident in your abilities.

Cleveland’s Planning Commission on Friday unanimously approved plans for the university’s Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building, at 187,000-square feet in size and six stories tall on the university quad just south of Euclid Avenue. But it is viewed as far more than just a change to the landscape.

“The ISEB will increase the amount and quality of research space at Case Western Reserve University, enabling the university to advance toward its goal of growing annual research expenditures from $400 million to $600 million, and to continue finding innovative solutions to address the world’s leading problems,” the school said in a statement.

Construction is to begin in May, with an expected completion date of fall 2026.

One side of the building will face Martin Luther King Jr. Drive; the other side facing the quad would be about 20 feet higher. It’s being built at the site of the former Yost Hall dormitory, due to be torn down late next month.

An adjacent landscaped “gateway,” or ADA accessible walkway, will wind up to the Quad outside the building, with outdoor seating and include, phone and laptop charging stations for students.

“Our primary goal for this building was to create a design solution that places the new building on the historic quad while providing seamless access to MLK Jr. Drive, and managing the challenge of ADA accessibility along with our slope walks in the gateway,” Joe Anderson, a representative of the landscaping team, told the city’s Planning Commission.

The second, third and fourth floors will consist of a combination of labs, offices and other collaboration spaces. Plans also show an enclosed penthouse on the fifth floor and a terrace on the second floor that looks out onto the Quad.

Plans call for demolition of the parking lot that faces MLK while moving the current sidewalk back to make room for a tree lawn.

The Planning Commission approved the schematic design after advising architects from HGA to explore more direct exterior connectivity to the ground level cafe space, as well as creating a landscape plan that emphasizes the gateway.

One aspect that was popular with the Commission was the plan to make the side of the building facing MLK an entrance, and not merely the back of the building. This side of campus had notoriously seemed isolated from the neighboring predominately Black neighborhoods.

The Paslay Group, a firm based in Fort Worth, Texas, will provide the planning and implementation around the modernizing of the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) terminal and concourse facilities, according to a Wednesday, Dec. 20 announcement.

, infrastructure modernization of Hopkins' 1950s-era main terminal and concourse is set to increase the ticketing and check-in area by more than 3,000 square feet; nearly double the security screening checkpoint square footage; and increase the number of gates from 45 to 53 while also increasing seating capacity at the gates.

This first phase of the master plan

is based on a projected increase to around 11 million annual passengers with improvements estimated to cost between $800 million and $900 million. This year, the airport is expected to see 10 million passengers for the first time since 2019.

Final plans for the new terminal design are expected to be formalized in 2024 and early construction is expected to begin in 2025, the centennial anniversary of the airport, according to the statement.

Paslay will lead the team responsible for the nearly $1 billion effort. That team includes Dallas, Texas-based architecture and design firm Corgan and Nashville-based airport development consulting firm Connico.

Cleveland-based firms will play a big role, too. Robert P. Madison International will provide design services. Van Auken Akins Architects will assist with the design. McGuiness Unlimited, Inc. will provide project control support. And Regency Construction Services, Inc., will assist with cost estimating and scheduling services.

The terminal modernization is funded by non-aviation-related revenues: concessions, parking, carrier rents and landing fees in addition to federal grants. This first phase comes as Hopkins is also negotiating new lease agreements with airline carriers.

Francis said the estimates are that every $1 million in construction spent on airport redesign will translate to about nine construction jobs with a total of 7,200 local jobs needed during the first phase of the master plan.

CRAINS CLEVELAND - 10/3/2023: Tuesday, Oct. 3, was such an achingly beautiful day in downtown Cleveland that you half-expected Bob Feller’s bronze statue to step down from his pedestal and start pitching batting practice to Jim Thome, Larry Doby, Frank Robinson and Lou Boudreau.

But on the day the MLB postseason began, the main activity at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario was on the “Hickory Highway,” a series of wood boards lining Progressive Field’s third base line that allows construction vehicles to move around the field without damaging the dirt.

The Guardians actually started work immediately after their final home game on Sept. 27 and are on track to complete two renovation projects by Opening Day 2024: the "Upper Deck Experience" and a new building on East Ninth Street.

The projects are part of the first phase of $202.5 million in renovations planned for Progressive Field over the next two years, part of the $435 million renovation package passed by the city and the county at the end of 2021. The other $232.5 million will go to capital improvements (concrete work, seating, new boilers, etc.).

The Guardians have already torn out the stadium's grass and have started removing outfield seats, as well as those upper deck shipping containers that were about as popular as the free agent signings of Josh Bell and Mike Zunino.

The new-look upper deck will feature a beer garden down the left field line, a new group outing space in right field and new concession spaces, including two new "View Box" bars that will flank home plate and allow for more open sightlines from the upper deck concourse.

The new four-level East Ninth Street building in right field will include a new kitchen and commissary for the Guardians concessionaire, as well as additional storage facilities for the ballpark. The rooftop will connect to the upper concourse and serve as a new group space.

The Guardians expect four other projects to be completed by Opening Day 2025:

The Terrace Hub, which will replace the enclosed Terrace Club that overlooks left field. The open-air hub will have terraced-ticketed seating on the 200 and 300 levels, and a Cleveland beer hall food and beverage experience on the 400 level that will be open to all fans. The ticketed seating sections will have their own private club space on the 300 level.

The Dugout Club, which will keep the current field-level seats while adding a new exclusive lounge behind home plate. The club will also feature seven private lounges for groups.

Clubhouse and service-level renovations. The clubhouse will be updated for the first time since Jacobs Field opened in 1994 and will focus on player amenities in performance, training and recovery.

For fans, the biggest in-season disruption will involve the main team shop, which will close in mid-December and remain closed throughout the 2024 season due to construction happening on the floors above it.

The team shop — which is accessible from Ontario Street during the offseason — is expected to remain open until Dec. 16, although the exact date could change.

Although that team shop accounts for about 50% of merchandise sales on game days, fans can buy merchandise at up to 10 other locations inside Progressive Field, depending on that day’s attendance. There are two major walk-in stores on the lower level and the team will lean on those during the 2024 season.

“We are working on some type of alternative (team shop) for next season, but we’re not ready to unveil the exact plans as of yet,” said Brian Tillinger, the team’s assistant director of retail operations.

When asked if the main team shop will look the same in 2025, Tillinger said that’s still to be determined.

“There are some things that don’t align, timeline-wise, with what’s going on with the upper deck and on the field, so that’s why there’s not 100% answers on that,” he said. “Some of it is a ‘not needed to be decided right now’ type of thing.”

This winter’s renovations will be the first at Progressive Field since a $26 million facelift in 2015, when the team revamped the right-field and bullpen areas, and added The Corner bar and neighborhood food options. That project was privately financed by the team and the club's concessionaire, Delaware North.

This project is much bigger, and it’s aimed at reaching a younger generation of fans who are just as likely to come to the ballpark to socialize as they are to watch baseball.

“We have one of the most beautiful ballparks in baseball to watch and enjoy baseball games,” said Chris Antonetti, the team’s president of baseball operations. “If we can put a compelling team on the field, and marry those two things, hopefully more people will continue to come.”

The exhibit has undergone a significant transformation, featuring notably larger and more intricate habitats and thoughtful design to encourage the natural behaviors of bears. These enhancements include the addition of climbing structures, elevated resting areas, and dig pits.Behind-the-scenes improvements have also been made to support nesting bears, with the inclusion of multi-level resting areas. Moreover, visitors can now enjoy an up-close experience with the bears through new glass viewing opportunities, allowing guests to come face-to-face with these magnificent creatures. An immersive treehouse has been created, offering guests nearly 360-degree views of the bear habitats. At the heart of the treehouse, there is a unique climbing structure that allows children to mimic the bears' climbing behaviors and provides a special vantage point into the habitats below.

more than two months ago, the Playhouse Square Foundation announced officially today that it will begin work in June on converting half of the Bulkley Building, 1501 Euclid Ave., in downtown Cleveland into market-rate apartments. Additionally, the nonprofit community development organization also said it has converted the fourth floor of the Hanna Building, across the street at 1422 Euclid, into co-working spaces called

In a written statement released today, Playhouse Square officials said workers will begin converting four floors of the nine-floor Bulkley Building in the coming days into 84 apartments, with a portion available for short-term rental by cast and crew members from shows appearing at Playhouse Square. They noted that seven touring productions visit Playhouse Square for at least three weeks each over the course of a year, along with hundreds of shorter engagements.

A New Model of Food Banking is Emerging

For a small but growing number of food banks, distributing food is no longer enough.

These food banks, including Feeding Tampa Bay and Greater Cleveland Food Bank, are re-orienting their operations to support a range of services that go beyond providing basic hunger relief. The wider scope is evident in the partnerships they are striking, and in the new spaces they are creating to tie an expanded set of services together.

The movement stems from a greater understanding of the challenges facing the food-insecure. People run out of money for food because they are trying to meet other expenses like housing, healthcare, transportation or utilities. Despite these other pressing needs, people tend to turn to charitable food first, because – with 60,000 food pantries and programs dotting the nation – it is the easiest type of assistance to access.
